Joshua D. Deininger began his dance training at a local studio in Helena, MT at the age of 15. He spent his summers attending the school of Ballet Chicago on full scholarship. After taking a year off after high school to pursue further ballet training he was accepted, again with full scholarship into the Division of Dance at Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University. His studies included Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Pilates, Health and Wellness, Dance History, Choreography, Labanotation – the formal notation system of dance, kiniesiology, stage production, and theater.
While at SMU Mr. Deininger performed with the Meadows Dance Ensemble and appeared with other companies and at high profile events in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. It was Mr. Deininger’s pleasure to perform works from a variety of master choreographers. These George Balanchine’s ‘Serenade’, Arthur Mitchell’s ‘Holburg Suite’, Maurice Bejart’s ‘Batucada’, Ben Stevenson’s ‘End of Time’ pas de deux, and Paul Taylor’s ‘Cloven Kingdom.’ In addition to the honor of dancing these works Mr. Deininger studied under faculty hailing from prestigious companies and schools around the world including the Royal Ballet School, Paris Opera Ballet, New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Canada’s National Ballet School, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Martha Graham Dance Company
Mr. Deininger took advantage of every opportunity available while at University including the opportunity in his senior year to work as the staging assistant to Jean Paul-Commelin – a French born choreographer, director, master teacher, and former principal with the Paris Opera Ballet. He assisted in the staging of Mr. Commelin’s pas de deux ‘Camille… A Poem of Intimacy.’
Upon graduating at the top of his class Mr. Deininger moved to Washington state to pursue a career as an Independent Professional Dance Artist in the Puget Sound area. He has appeared in productions and choreographed for Ballet Bellevue (now City Opera Ballet), Inception Dance Theater, and Northwest Ballet Theater. During the time that he was working with Northwest Ballet Theater under the directorship of John Bishop, Mr. Deininger was cast in the title role for a brand new production to be choreographed on him specifically, “Dracula.” It was also in Seattle dancing for Inception Dance Theater that Mr. Deininger met his wife and ballet partner Elizabeth Voiles. The two of them appear frequently together as guest artists for productions throughout the Pacific Northwest.
In 2015 Mr. Deininger received a special invitation to return to his home town of Helena, MT to serve as Ballet Master and Artist in Residence at his former ballet studio. He took the opportunity to go home and give back to the community that got him off to his start with ballet. After a year in Montana Mr. Deining decided it was time to get back to his career as a Professional Independent Dancer. He now is working with the students of Central Oregon School of Ballet in Bend, OR and performing as a guest artist with his wife in the region.
